Safari West is a destination that puts an emphasis on conservation, wildlife advocacy and education through first hand safari tour encounters, and luxury tent accommodations amidst the world’s most exotic animals. This year, Sunset Magazine listed it as one of the top 300 destinations in the western United States. Now with over 60,000 annual visitors, Safari West was rated by AAA second only to Disneyland as a must experience location in California. The ongoing mission of Safari West is wildlife preservation through breeding, education, research and public interaction. Safari West gained full accreditation in the American Zoo and Aquarium Association, one of only six private facilities in North America to belong to that prestigious organization. At the time of opening, the park had 150 acres of enclosures that allowed naturalists to promote wildlife advocacy and conservation by providing three-hour educational excursions. Founded in 1993 by Peter and Nancy Lang, Safari West started offering authentic African safaris on July 4th of that year. Guided by 5-year veteran, Jenna, we got to see some 900 birds and animals from Africa and the far reaches of the globe, including several endangered species, in most natural settings and habitats. Tuesday morning, following a great night’s sleep and after devouring our continental breakfast, my wife and I, along with her brother and his wife, embarked on our Safari…a three hour walking and riding tour of this extraordinary 400 acre facility. Relaxing after dinner on our deck overlooking Catfish Lake with some delectable chardonnay, we were serenaded by the sounds of exotic birds and African animals as they prepared to bed down for the night. A good selection of wine and beer was available for additional purchase. The food was delicious and plentiful, with a excellent variety and all-you-could-eat. After arrival and being checked into our tent and delivered to it by jeep, we had a monster buffet dinner at the Savannah Café with my wife’s brother and wife niece and her hubby and their 1½ year-old son,) and her nephew and his sweetie. We just returned from a fabulous “Glamping*” adventure in the Sonoma Serengeti at this incredible resort. Who would have thought that in the middle of Northern California’s famous Wine Region, a wild animal park featuring luxury accommodations and “safari-like experiences” would exist? Well it does, and it’s called Safari West in Santa Rosa.
